[목회서신] 자신이 늘 옳다는 생각을 내려놓는 지혜 | The Wisdom of Letting Go of the Thought That You Are Always Right

나이가 들면서 내려놓아야 할 것이 많다는 것을 거듭 생각하게 됩니다. 내려놓아야 할 것 중의 하나가 자신이 늘 옳다는 생각입니다. 우리는 하나님이 아닙니다. 연약한 인간입니다. 그런 까닭에 우리 생각이 늘 옳을 수 없습니다. 우리 생각은 과거의 배움과 경험과 만남과 성공과 성취와 실수와 실패를 통해 형성됩니다. 우리는 모든 것을 알 수 없습니다. 우리는 하나님이 아닌 까닭에 전지(全知)하지 않습니다. 배우면 배울수록 모르는 것이 많다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 지혜는 아직도 모르는 것이 많다는 깨달음에 있습니다.

겸손한 성품 중의 하나는 지적인 겸손입니다. 지적인 겸손은 아직도 모르는 것이 많으며 자신이 틀릴 수 있다는 태도입니다. 자신이 모든 것을 알고 있으며 자신은 모르는 게 없다는 덫에 걸리면 큰일입니다. 그것을 지능의 덫(the Intelligence Trap)이라고 부릅니다. 때로는 정말 똑똑한 사람같이 보이는 데 어리석은 실수를 하는 것을 봅니다. 초등학생도 이해가 안 되는 잘못된 선택과 결정을 하는 것을 봅니다. 그 이유는 지능의 덫에 걸린 까닭입니다. 왜 우리에게 지적인 겸손이 필요할까요?

첫째, 지적 겸손을 통해 과신(過信, Overconfidence)의 오류를 범하지 않을 수 있습니다. 과신이란 자신의 지식, 능력, 판단이 실제보다 더 정확하고 완벽하다고 믿는 심리적 오류를 의미합니다. 과신이란 단어 속에는 “지나치다”는 뜻이 내포되어 있습니다. 선을 넘어선 것입니다. 왜 사람이 과신의 덫에 걸려들까요? 과거의 성공 때문입니다. 과거의 성공 경험이 과신을 낳습니다. 하지만 과거의 성공이 지속될 수 없습니다. 우리는 이전의 많은 지식을 폐기해야 하는 시대에 살고 있습니다. 또한 이전에 소중하게 여겼던 정보와 기술이 더 이상 필요 없습니다. 이전의 차원과는 전혀 다른 차원의 세계 속에 살고 있습니다. 그런데도 옛날의 성공에 도취되어 같은 생각과 같은 방법과 같은 전략과 같은 시스템을 사용한다면 지속적인 성공을 이룰 수 없습니다.

둘째, 지적 겸손은 지적 유연성을 낳습니다. 변화의 속도가 빠른 시대에 필요한 것은 유연성입니다. 유연성은 적응력입니다. 유연성은 변화에 잘 대응하는 능력입니다. 지적 유연성을 가진 사람은 새로운 지식과 정보와 기술과 도구를 환영합니다. 기존의 생각을 고집하지 않고 더 나은 생각을 환영합니다. 지적으로 교만한 사람은 경직되어 있습니다. 다른 사람의 생각이나 새로운 생각을 받아들이지 않습니다. 정말 위험한 것은 확증 편향(Confirmation Bias)입니다. 확증 편향은 자신이 믿고 싶은 정보만 받아들이는 경향입니다. 자신의 생각과 반대되는 정보는 무시하는 경향을 의미합니다. 확증 편향을 갖고 있는 사람의 특징은 경직(硬直)입니다. 경직(硬直)이란 돌처럼 단단하고 변하지 않는 상태입니다. 경직은 신체적으로나 정신적으로 유연성이 부족한 상태입니다.

무엇이든 경직되고 딱딱한 것은 위험합니다. 딱딱하면 부서집니다. 유연해야 부서지지 않고 흐름을 잘 탈 수 있습니다. 우리는 급변하는 시대 속에 살 뿐만 아니라 불확실한 시대 속에 살고 있습니다. 예측이 불가능한 시대 속에 살고 있습니다. 유연함이란 불확실한 현실을 수용하는 것입니다. 새로운 흐름을 분별하고, 그 흐름을 잘 타는 것입니다. 불확실한 현실 속에서 기회를 찾아내고, 문제 해결책을 발견하는 것입니다. 변화하는 시대에 변화하지 않으면 도태됩니다. 변화는 생존을 위해 필수입니다. 또한 변화에 유연하게 대처할 때 풍성한 삶을 경험할 수 있습니다.

셋째, 지적 겸손은 협업의 길입니다. 교만한 사람은 스스로 모든 것을 안다고 착각하기 때문에 다른 사람의 도움을 받지 않습니다. 스승을 무시합니다. 집단 지능(Collective Intelligence)을 무시합니다. 다른 사람의 의견을 경청하지 않습니다. 반면에 겸손한 사람은 더불어 일하는 것을 좋아합니다. 통합과 융합을 통해 더 좋은 결과를 맺을 수 있다는 것을 압니다. 반대 의견 속에서도 배움을 얻습니다. 그런 과정을 통해 가장 최상의 길을 선택하게 됩니다.

넷째, 지적 겸손은 평생 학습의 길입니다. 지혜는 평생 학습을 통해 길러집니다. 지식과 지혜는 다릅니다. 지식은 정보를 습득하고 이해하는 것입니다. 지혜는 정보를 분별한 후에, 좋은 정보를 선택해서 어떻게 적용할지 아는 능력입니다. 지혜는 하늘에서 임합니다. 또한 겸손한 배움과 경험의 축적의 열매입니다. 평생 학습이 지혜의 길인 까닭은 우리가 배운 지식이 영원히 유효하지 않기 때문입니다. 음식과 약에 유통기한이 있는 것처럼 지식과 정보에도 유통기한이 있습니다. 유통기한이 지난 지식과 정보에 매달려 있으면 시대에 뒤처질 가능성이 높습니다.

평생 학습자로 살아가는 자세는 열린 마음입니다. 열린 마음이란 “나는 아직도 배울 것이 많다”라는 태도입니다. 매일 새로운 것을 배우려는 자세입니다. 다양한 경험을 통해 배우는 자세입니다. 모든 사건과 만남을 배움의 기회로 여기는 것입니다. 대화할 때도 이기려고 대화하는 것이 아니라 배우기 위해 대화하는 것입니다. 대화는 이기기 위해 하는 것이 아닙니다. 소통하기 위해 하는 것입니다. 사람을 얻기 위해 대화하는 것입니다. 배우는 자세로 소통하면 사람을 얻을 수 있습니다. 지적 겸손을 통해 더욱 풍성한 삶을 사시길 빕니다.

The Wisdom of Letting Go of the Thought That You Are Always Right

  As I grow older, I often reflect on the many things I need to let go of. One of those things is the belief that I am always right. We are not God. We are weak human beings. For that reason, our thoughts cannot always be right. Our thoughts are shaped by our past learning, experiences, encounters, successes, achievements, mistakes, and failures. We do not know everything. Since we are not God, we are not omniscient. The more we learn, the more we realize how much we do not know. Wisdom lies in the realization that there is still much we do not know.

One characteristic of humility is intellectual humility. Intellectual humility is the attitude of acknowledging that there is still much we do not know and that we can be wrong. It is dangerous to fall into the trap of thinking that we know everything and that there is nothing we do not understand. This is known as “The Intelligence Trap.” At times, we see individuals who appear highly intelligent yet make foolish mistakes. We even witness people making choices and decisions so obviously wrong that even an elementary school student would not make them. The reason is that they have fallen into the intelligence trap. Why do we need intellectual humility?

First, intellectual humility prevents us from making the mistake of overconfidence. Overconfidence is a psychological error where one believes their knowledge, abilities, and judgment are more precise and perfect than they actually are. The word “overconfidence” inherently contains the idea of going “too far.” It is crossing a line. Why do people fall into the trap of overconfidence? It stems from their past successes. Past success often breeds overconfidence. However, past success does not guarantee future success. We live in an era where much of our previous knowledge must be discarded. Information and skills once considered valuable may no longer be necessary. We now exist in a world of a completely different dimension from before. If we remain intoxicated by past successes and continue to use the same thoughts, methods, strategies, and systems, we will not be able to achieve lasting success.

Second, intellectual humility fosters intellectual flexibility. In a rapidly changing era, what we need is flexibility. Flexibility is adaptability. It is the ability to respond well to change. Those with intellectual flexibility welcome new knowledge, information, technology, and tools. They do not stubbornly cling to existing thoughts but welcome better ideas. However, intellectually arrogant people are rigid. They refuse to accept new or different ideas. One of the most dangerous tendencies is “confirmation bias.” Confirmation bias is the tendency to accept only the information that aligns with what we already believe while ignoring information that contradicts our views. People with confirmation bias are characterized by rigidity. Rigidity means being as hard as stone and unchanging. It is a state of lacking physical and mental flexibility.

Anything that is rigid and unyielding is dangerous. If something is too hard, it breaks. Only flexibility prevents breakage and allows us to flow with the currents. We live not only in an era of rapid change but also in an age of uncertainty. We exist in times where predictions are nearly impossible. Flexibility means embracing this uncertain reality. It is about discerning new trends and riding them well. It is about finding opportunities amidst uncertainty and discovering solutions to problems. In an era of change, failing to adapt leads to obsolescence. Change is essential for survival. Furthermore, when we respond flexibly to change, we can experience a richer life.

Third, intellectual humility paves the way for collaboration. Arrogant people, believing they know everything, refuse to accept help from others. They disregard mentors. They ignore “collective intelligence.” They do not listen to the opinions of others. In contrast, humble people enjoy working with others. They understand that better results come from integration and synergy. They learn even from opposing viewpoints. Through this process, they can choose the best possible path.

Fourth, intellectual humility leads to lifelong learning. Wisdom is cultivated through lifelong learning. Knowledge and wisdom are different. Knowledge is the acquisition and understanding of information. Wisdom is the ability to discern information, select what is good, and apply it effectively. Wisdom comes from above. It is also the fruit of humble learning and accumulated experience. Lifelong learning is the path to wisdom because the knowledge we acquire does not remain relevant forever. Just as food and medicine have expiration dates, knowledge and information also have shelf lives. Clinging to expired knowledge and outdated information increases the likelihood of falling behind the times.

The attitude of a lifelong learner is one of an open mind. An open mind says, "There is still so much I need to learn." It is the posture of striving to learn something new every day. It is an attitude of learning through various experiences. It is seeing every event and encounter as an opportunity to learn. Even in conversations, the goal should not be to win but to learn. Conversation is not about winning; it is about communication. It is about building relationships. When we communicate with a learning attitude, we gain people. May you live a more abundant life through intellectual humility.
