아버지가 변하면 아들이 변한다!

오늘 목회서신의 제목은 오운철목사님이 최근에 출판한 책 이름입니다. 오목사님의 사랑하는 아들이 사춘기에 잘못된 길로 갈 때 아버지는 아들이 변화되길 간절히 소원했습니다. 하지만 아들은 쉽게 변화되지 않았습니다. 목사님은 변화되지 않은 아들과 씨름하는 중에 자신이 먼저 변화되어야 함을 깨달았습니다. 아버지가 변화되었을 때 또한 아들이 변화되는 경험을 했습니다. 《아버지가 변하면 아들이 변한다》는 아버지와 아들이 함께 변화되는 감동적인 스토리입니다. 하나님이 어떻게 아버지와 아들의 변화가운데 역사하셨는지를 보여주는 울림이 있는 스토리입니다.

우리는 다 변화를 원합니다. 하지만 변화는 결코 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 톨스토이는 “모든 사람들은 인간이 변화되어야 한다고 생각하나 자기 자신이 변화되어야 한다는 것은 생각하지 않는다.” 라고 말했습니다. 우리는 주위의 사람들이 변화되어야 한다고 생각합니다. 또한 함께 사는 사람들을 변화시키려고 몸부림칩니다. 하지만 정작 자신이 변화되어야 한다는 생각은 잘하지 않았습니다. 그 이유는 자신을 정직하게 대면하지 않기 때문입니다. 남을 변화시키고 싶다면 먼저 자신이 변화를 경험해야 합니다. 자신의 변화를 경험해 본 사람은 어떻게 사람이 변화되는 가를 잘 압니다. 변화를 원한다면 변화에 대한 관심을 가져야 합니다. 변화가 주는 유익을 잘 알아야 합니다. 또한 사람은 어떻게 변화되는 가에 대해서도 배워야 합니다.

변화란 아름다운 것입니다. 변화는 성장을 의미합니다. 성숙을 의미합니다. 조금 더 나아가 원숙에 이르는 것을 의미합니다. 원숙이란 무르익음입니다. 원숙함에 이르게 되면 자신의 변화를 통해 이 세상을 아름답게 만들고, 만나는 사람들을 아름답게 만듭니다. 반면에 변질은 좋지 않습니다. 변질은 전보다 나빠지는 것입니다. 똑같은 음식도 시간이 지나면서 발효될 수도 있고, 부패될 수도 있습니다. 발효된 음식은 건강에 아주 좋습니다. 반면에 부패된 음식을 먹게 되면 건강을 해치게 됩니다.

변화란 좋은 것입니다. 변화란 여름에 신 맛 나던 푸른 사과가, 가을에 단 맛 나는 붉은 사과로 바뀌는 것을 의미합니다. 변화란 예수님이 가나혼인잔치에서 물을 포도주로 바꾸시는 것과 같습니다. 그 당시 혼인잔치에서는 포도주가 필요했습니다. 그런데 포도주가 떨어진 것입니다. 잔칫집에 포도주가 떨어진 것은 당황스러운 일입니다. 예수님의 어머니가 예수님께 그 사실을 알렸습니다. 예수님은 그 당시 손발을 씻는데 사용하는 물 항아리 여섯에 물을 채우라고 하인들에게 명하셨습니다. 예수님은 손발을 씻는데 사용하는 물을 포도주로 만드셨습니다. 그리함으로 가나혼인잔치는 기쁨으로 충만했습니다. 가나혼인잔치의 기적이 의미하는 것은 무엇일까요? 변화의 아름다움입니다. 예수님은 평범한 것을 가치 있는 것으로 변화시켜 주셨습니다. 변화란 가치 없는 것에서 가치 있는 것으로, 좋은 것에서 최상의 것으로 발전하는 것을 의미합니다.

그렇다면 언제 우리는 변화를 추구하게 되는 것일까요? 어떤 일을 통해 변화를 경험하게 되는 것일까요? 첫째, 고통이 우리를 변화시킵니다. 우리는 고통이 심화되기 전까지 변화를 추구하지 않습니다. 고통은 변화를 자극하는 촉매제입니다. 둘째, 꿈이 우리를 변화시킵니다. 꿈은 변화를 창조하는 재료입니다. 가치 있고 의미 있는 꿈을 꾸게 되면 사람은 변화됩니다. 셋째, 만남이 우리를 변화시킵니다. 좋은 만남 그리고 의미 있는 만남이 우리를 새롭게 변화시킵니다. 넷째, 사랑이 우리를 변화시킵니다. 우리가 누군가를 사랑하고, 또한 누군가의 사랑을 받을 때 우리는 변화됩니다. 다섯째, 책을 통해 우리는 변화됩니다. 책을 읽으면 우리가 왜 변화되어야 하며, 무엇이 변화되어야 하며, 어떻게 변화될 수 있는 가를 잘 안내해 줍니다. 책 속에 길이 있습니다. 책 중의 책은 성경입니다. 성경을 먼저 읽으십시오. 또한 성경과 함께 좋은 책들을 읽으십시오.

무엇보다 하나님이 도와주실 때 변화됩니다. 하나님이 우리 삶속에 개입하실 때 변화가 창조됩니다. 그래서 기도가 중요합니다. 기도하면 하나님이 도와주십니다. 기도하면 변화됩니다. 고통, 꿈, 만남, 사랑, 그리고 책은 하나님이 우리를 변화시키는 은총의 도구입니다. 하나님이 도와주시기 때문에 우리는 아무 것도 하지 않아도 된다고 생각하면 안 됩니다. 하나님의 도우심과 우리의 변화에 대한 갈망이 함께 만날 때 변화는 이루어집니다. 성령님의 도우심과 변화를 위한 우리의 선택과 의지와 훈련이 함께 할 때 아름다운 변화가 창조됩니다. 저는 제 자신의 변화와 성도님들의 변화와 성숙에 관심이 많습니다. 그 이유는 우리의 궁극적인 삶의 이유가 예수님을 닮아가는 변화와 성숙에 있기 때문입니다. 하나님의 은혜와 영적 훈련을 통해 아름다운 변화를 경험하시길 빕니다. 성도님들의 사랑에 거듭 감사드립니다.

When The Father Changes, The Son Changes!

The title of today's pastoral letter is the title of the book Pastor Unchul Oh recently published. When Pastor Oh's beloved son went down the wrong path in adolescence, the father desperately desired for his son to change. But the son was not easily changed. As Pastor Oh wrestled with his unchanging son, he began to realize that he had to change first. When the father changed, the son also experienced transformation. "When The Father Changes, The Son Changes," is a touching story where both the father and the son change together. It is a story that echoes how God had worked in the transformation of the father and the son.

We all want change. But change is never an easy task. Tolstoy said, “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” We think that people around us should be changed. We also struggle to change people who we live with. But we do not think that we ourselves should be changed. The reason is because we are not honest with ourselves. If you want to change others, you must first experience change. The person who experiences change knows how others can change. If you want change, you have to be interested in change. You must know the benefits of change. You must also learn how people change.

Change is beautiful. Change means growth. It means becoming mature. It means going a little further and growing towards full maturity. Full maturity is ripeness. When we reach full maturity, we make our world beautiful through our own changes and influence the people we meet to become more beautiful. On the other hand, when something is spoiled, it is not good. It is worse than before. The same food may become rotten or fermented over time. Fermented food is very good for your health. In contrast, eating rotten food will harm your health.

Change is good. Change is that of a green apple, which tastes sour in the summer, and sweet in autumn as it turns red. Change is like the miracle that Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding banquet at Cana. At that time, wine was needed in the wedding banquet. But the wine ran out. It was an embarrassing thing for the wine to run out during a banquet. Jesus' mother informed Him of this fact. Jesus commanded the servants to fill the six water jars which was used to wash hands and feet. Jesus turned the water that was used to wash hands and feet into wine. So, the wedding banquet at Cana was filled with joy. What does the miracle of the wedding banquet at Cana show? It shows the beauty of change. Jesus transformed ordinary things into something worthy. Transformation is the progress to change from unworthy to valuable and from good to the best.

If so, when will we pursue change? Through what ways do we experience change? First, pain changes us. We do not seek change until the pain is intensified. Pain is a catalyst to stimulate change. Second, dreams change us. Dreams are the raw material that creates change. When people have a worthy and meaningful dream, they will change. Third, encounters change us. Good and meaningful encounters make us anew. Fourth, love changes us. We change when we love someone and when we receive love from someone. Fifth, we change through books. Reading a book guides us well to why we need to be changed, in what ways we need to be changed, and how we can be changed. There is a way in the book. The book of the books is the Bible. Read the Bible first. Also read good books along with the Bible.

Above all, we can change when God helps us. When God intervenes in our lives, change is created. That is why prayer is important. God helps us when we pray. If you pray, you will change. Pain, dreams, encounters, love, and books are means of grace that God uses to transform us. We should not think that we do not have to do anything because God helps us. Changes happen when God's help and our longing for change come together. A beautiful change is created when our choice, will, and discipline for change come together with the help of the Holy Spirit. I am interested in my own change and in the transformation and maturity of believers. The reason is that our ultimate reason for life is in the transformation and maturity that resembles Jesus. May you experience beautiful change through the grace of God and spiritual discipline. Thank you again for your love.
