[목회서신] 검은 보자기에 싸인 축복을 감사로 받으십시오! | Embrace the Blessing Wrapped in Black Cloth with Gratitude

   제가 《꿈꾸는 자가 오는도다》라는 책을 쓸 때 A. B. 심슨의 글을 인용한 적이 있습니다. 그는 “고난은 검은 보자기에 싸인 축복이다.”라고 말했습니다. 고난 속에 축복이 숨겨져 있다는 역설적 진리를 담은 글입니다. 고난이 찾아올 때 우리는 당황합니다. 혼돈스럽습니다. 고통스럽습니다. 고난의 겉모습은 검은 보자기처럼 보입니다. 그런데 세월이 지난 후에 돌이켜 보면 하나님이 고난 속에 축복을 담아두신 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 검은 보자기에 싸인 축복을 감사로 받으십시오!

저는 요셉을 좋아하고, 요셉의 이야기를 좋아합니다. 그 이유는 요셉이 고난을 통해 복을 받았고, 고난을 통해 사명을 완수한 까닭입니다. 고난을 축복의 기회로 삼은 까닭입니다. 요셉이 먼저 경험한 것은 “구덩이”입니다. 그의 형제들이 그를 “구덩이”에 던져 넣었습니다. 구덩이는 깜깜합니다. 어둡습니다. 형제들이 나중에 구덩이에서 그를 끌어내어 애굽에 종으로 팔아 넘겼습니다. 하나님이 고난 중에 그를 축복해 주셨습니다. 하나님이 보디발을 통해 은혜를 베풀어 주십니다. 요셉은 보디발의 가정총무로 일했습니다. 하지만 요셉은 보디발의 아내의 유혹을 물리친 대가로 감옥에 들어갑니다. 감옥은 어둡습니다. 하지만 그곳에서 그의 인생의 실마리를 풀어 줄 수 있는 술맡은 관원장을 만납니다.

고난은 신비롭습니다. 고난 때문에 더 잘된 사람들을 만납니다. 고난을 잘 해석하고 올바로 반응하면 고난은 우리를 유익하게 합니다. 중요한 것은 긍정적으로 해석하고 긍정적으로 반응하는 것입니다. 고난을 긍정적으로 해석하고 반응한다는 것은 무엇을 의미할까요? 하나님의 큰 그림으로 우리 인생을 바라보는 것입니다. 하나님의 섭리로 고난을 해석하는 것입니다. 하나님의 섭리의 손길 안에서, 고난은 그를 신뢰하는 사람에게 복을 주시는 변장된 축복입니다. 하나님의 섭리를 통해 복을 주시는 성경의 약속을 붙잡으십시오. “우리가 알거니와 하나님을 사랑하는 자 곧 그의 뜻대로 부르심을 입은 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루느니라”(롬 8:28).

요셉은 고난 때문에 전혀 생각하지 못했던 곳으로 뻗어가게 됩니다. 고난 때문에 전혀 예상치 못했던 낯선 만남과 새로운 만남을 갖게 됩니다. 요셉은 익숙한 형제들 때문에 억울한 일을 겪습니다. 반면에 낯선 만남을 통해 복을 받습니다. 요셉은 고난 때문에 이전에 알지 못했던 자신 안에 숨겨진 재능과 잠재력을 발견하게 됩니다. 고난이 아니었으면 결코 경험할 수 없는 놀라운 경험을 하게 됩니다.

제 인생에 찾아왔던 고난의 날들을 생각해 봅니다. 그때 정말 힘들었습니다. 파란 하늘이 노랗게 보였습니다. 제 인생에 그림자가 깃들었습니다. 꿈은 산산조각이 났습니다. 관계는 깨어졌습니다. 염려가 친구처럼 자주 찾아왔습니다. 두려움이 엄습했습니다. 저는 쓰러졌습니다. 그런데 하나님이 다시 일으켜 세워주셨습니다. 하나님이 제게 감사의 글을 쓰게 하셨습니다. 조금 더 자세히 설명해 드리면 감사의 글을 쓸 수 있는 기회를 주셨습니다. 그때 제게 감사의 글을 쓸 수 있는 지면을 제공해 주신 분이 기록문화연구소의 이태형소장님이십니다.

저는 고난을 감사로 반응하기 시작했습니다. 매주 감사의 글을 한편씩 국민일보 인터넷 신문에 기고했습니다. 감사의 글을 쓰면서 점점 영적인 눈이 밝아졌습니다. 하나님을 응시할 수 있게 되었습니다. 고난 속에서 역사하시는 하나님의 손길을 보게 되었습니다. 고난의 검은 보자기에 싸인 축복을 감사로 풀었습니다. 검은 보자기를 풀지 않으면 축복을 선물로 받을 수가 없습니다. 아무리 좋은 선물을 받았다 할지라도 포장을 뜯지 않으면 그 선물을 누릴 수 없습니다. 감사란 선물 포장을 뜯어내고 선물을 받아 누리는 것입니다. 감사란 검은 보자기를 푸는 열쇠입니다.

감사를 반복하는 중에 감사의 근육이 점점 강해지는 것을 경험했습니다. 감사는 감사를 낳습니다. 감사를 반복하는 중에 제게 상처를 준 사람들을 용서할 수 있었습니다. 감사를 반복하는 중에 흑암 중에 감추인 보화를 발견하게 되었습니다. 감사를 반복하는 중에 하나님이 쓰러진 저를 일으켜 세워주시는 은혜를 경험했습니다. 감사를 반복하는 중에 하나님은 제가 원했던 것보다 필요한 것을 선물해 주셨습니다. 제가 상실한 것보다 더 좋은 것들을 선물해 주셨습니다.

고난은 우리를 겸손하게 만듭니다. 고난은 우리를 바닥으로 내려가게 만듭니다. 그런데 놀라운 사실은 하나님은 낮은 곳에 놀라운 복과 기회를 숨겨 놓으신다는 사실입니다. 해리 포터의 저자 J.K. 롤링은 “바닥은 내가 내 삶을 다시 세운 단단한 기반이 되었다."고 말합니다. 바닥에 내려갈 때 우리는 겸손해집니다. 가장 소중한 것이 무엇인가를 깨닫습니다. 바닥에서 이전과는 전혀 다른 태도와 다른 방식으로 새롭게 시작할 용기를 얻습니다. 바닥에서 신비로운 창의력을 발휘하게 됩니다. 바닥은 끝이 아닙니다. 다시 솟구쳐 오르는 새로운 시작입니다.

하나님은 감사를 통해 고난을 축복으로 바꾸어 주십니다. 감사하면 고난 속에 감추인 하나님의 섭리를 깨닫게 됩니다. 날마다 감사함으로 감사의 근육을 키우도록 합시다. 감사를 통해 기적을 경험하십시오. 감사는 고난을 축복으로 만드는 열쇠입니다!

Embrace the Blessing Wrapped in Black Cloth with Gratitude

   When writing Here Comes the Dreamer, I quoted A. B. Simpson, who said, “Affliction is a blessing wrapped in black cloth.” This profound statement encapsulates the paradoxical truth that blessings are often hidden within suffering. When suffering comes, we are bewildered, confused, and in pain. It appears to us as a black cloth shrouding our lives. Yet, as time passes, we come to realize that God has concealed a blessing within our trials.

I have a special admiration for Joseph and his story. Joseph’s life illustrates how he received blessings through suffering and fulfilled his calling through those very hardships. He transformed his trials into opportunities for blessing. His first experience of suffering was in the "pit." His brothers cast him into a dark, desolate pit. Later, they pulled him out only to sell him into slavery in Egypt. Yet, God blessed Joseph even in his suffering, showing him favor through Potiphar. Joseph rose to manage Potiphar’s household, but resisting the temptations of Potiphar’s wife led to imprisonment. The prison was another dark place, but there he met the cupbearer, who would later unlock the path to his destiny.

Suffering is a mystery. Through it, we often encounter people who transform our lives for the better. When we interpret suffering positively and respond appropriately, it works for our good. What does it mean to interpret and respond to suffering positively? It means seeing our lives from the perspective of God’s grand design, understanding trials as part of His providence. As Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Through suffering, Joseph found himself in unexpected places, meeting people he would never have imagined encountering. While he suffered betrayal at the hands of his familiar brothers, he received blessings through new and unforeseen relationships. Suffering also revealed hidden talents and potential within him, gifts he might never have discovered otherwise. Joseph’s story shows that suffering can lead us to remarkable experiences we would not have otherwise known.

Reflecting on my own days of suffering, I recall the pain, the sense of despair, and the shattering of my dreams. Shadows loomed over my life, relationships were broken, and worry became a constant companion. Fear overwhelmed me, and I fell. Yet God lifted me up again, leading me to write expressions of gratitude. By His grace, I was given opportunities to share my gratitude in the public domain, thanks to the kind provision of Director Lee Tae-hyung of the Institute of Cultural Records.

I began to respond to suffering with gratitude. Each week, I contributed a piece of gratitude writing to an online newspaper. Through this practice, my spiritual vision grew clearer. I began to see God’s hand at work in my trials and discovered the blessings wrapped in the black cloth of suffering. Without unwrapping that dark package, we cannot receive the blessings within. No matter how precious the gift, it must be unwrapped to be enjoyed. Gratitude is the key to unwrapping this gift.

As I practiced gratitude repeatedly, I found my "gratitude muscles" strengthening. Gratitude led to more gratitude. It allowed me to forgive those who had caused me pain, uncover treasures hidden in darkness, and experience God’s grace lifting me up from despair. Through gratitude, God gave me not just what I wanted but what I truly needed, and He replaced what I lost with far greater blessings.

Suffering humbles us, bringing us low, yet remarkably, God conceals blessings and opportunities within these humble places. As J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, observed, “Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.” In the depths, we learn humility, rediscover what is most valuable, and find the courage to start anew with a transformed mindset. Creativity often flourishes in these places. Rock bottom is not the end—it is a springboard for a new beginning.

God transforms suffering into blessing through gratitude. When we choose gratitude, we perceive God’s providence hidden in our trials. Let us cultivate our "gratitude muscles" daily, embracing the miracles God performs through gratitude. Indeed, gratitude is the key that turns suffering into blessing!
