[목회서신] 깨달음이 선물해 주는 즐거움 | The Most Precious Yet Most Challenging Thing!

점점 깊어져 가는 나이를 부인할 수 없습니다. 자연에 사계절이 있는 것처럼, 인생에도 사계절이 있습니다. 계절은 거부할 수 없는 흐름입니다. 어떻게 겨울이 찾아오는 것을 막을 수 있겠습니까? 어떻게 봄이 찾아오는 것을 막을 수 있겠습니까? 썰물과 밀물의 흐름을 억지로 바꿀 수 있겠습니까? 지혜는 흐름을 잘 읽어내고, 그 흐름을 잘 타는 데 있습니다. 물론 모천(母川)을 찾아가는 연어처럼 물살을 거슬러 올라갈 수도 있습니다. 하지만 연어가 모천을 찾아가기 위해 거센 물살을 타고 올라가는 것도, 연어 인생의 끝자락에 왔다는 것을 의미합니다.

나이가 들었다고 해서 마음까지 나이가 든 것은 아닙니다. 어른들의 마음은 여전히 청춘입니다. 여전히 꿈을 꾸고, 도전하고 싶은 일도 많습니다. 배움에 대한 갈망이 어느 때보다 강렬합니다. 하지만 세월이 흘러가고 나이가 드는 것을 부인할 수 없습니다. 그래도 나이가 들어가면서 좋은 것이 있습니다. 그것은 인생 전체를 관망해 볼 수 있는 안목이 생긴 것입니다. 시대가 바뀌어도 변하지 않는 원리와 법칙이 있다는 것을 깨달은 것입니다. 수많은 경험을 통해 깨달은 농축된 지혜를 나눌 수 있다는 것입니다. 제가 경험한 농축된 지혜는 무엇이 소중한가를 깨달은 것입니다. 가장 소중하지만 가장 힘든 것이 있습니다. 그것은 “꾸준함”입니다.

얼마 전, 우연한 기회에 나영석 PD의 인터뷰를 들었습니다. 그는 “예전엔 ‘대단한’ 사람들이 대단하다고 느껴졌는데 이제는 어떤 일을 지치지 않고 꾸준히 하는 사람이 대단하게 느껴진다.”고 했습니다. 어떤 일을 지치지 않고 꾸준히 하는 사람이 대단한 사람입니다. 물론 쓸모없는 일에 꾸준한 것은 좋지 않습니다. 정말 중요하고 가치 있는 일에 꾸준해야 합니다. 무엇보다 자신의 사명과 삶의 목적에 꾸준해야 합니다. 꾸준함에 대한 동의어를 찾아보았습니다. “지속성, 일관성, 끈기, 인내, 불굴, 성실함, 끈덕짐, 한결같음”이라는 단어들로 나열할 수 있습니다. 왜 꾸준함이 중요할까요?

첫째, 꾸준함은 신뢰를 얻는 비결이기 때문입니다. 돈보다 중요한 것이 신용입니다. 때로는 돈을 잃을 수 있지만 신용을 잘 쌓은 사람에게는 거듭 기회가 주어집니다. 신용을 쌓게 되면 재물은 서서히 따라오는 것을 봅니다. 사람들에게 우리를 신뢰해 달라고 부탁하는 것은 바람직하지 않습니다. 신뢰는 부탁해서 얻을 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 신뢰란, 사람들이 우리의 삶을 지켜보는 중에 선물해 주는 것입니다. 사람들은 한결같은 사람을 신뢰합니다. 성실한 사람을 신뢰합니다. 진실한 사람을 신뢰합니다. 신용을 쌓고, 신뢰를 얻는 것도 실력입니다. 사람들은 신뢰하는 사람에게 소중한 일을 맡깁니다. 소중한 것을 맡깁니다.

둘째, 꾸준함은 성취의 비결이기 때문입니다. 시작만 하고 끝내지 못한 것들이 많이 있습니다. 시작한 모든 것들을 다 끝낼 필요는 없습니다. 하지만 우리 삶을 풍성하게 해 주는 것들을 시작했다면 끝마치는 것이 중요합니다. 시작한 것을 끝마치기 위해서는 꾸준함의 힘을 길러야 합니다. 꾸준한 노력, 꾸준한 훈련, 꾸준한 배움, 그리고 꾸준한 절제가 중요합니다. 작지만 매일 반복하는 것이 꾸준함의 비결입니다. 존 칼빈은 “꾸준함은 모든 성취의 기초이다.‘고 말했습니다. 앤드류 카네기는 “꾸준함이야말로 모든 성취의 비결이다.”고 말했습니다. 조금 늦어도 괜찮습니다. 중요한 것은 일을 완수하기까지 정진하는 것입니다.

셋째, 꾸준함은 성공의 비결이기 때문입니다. 우리는 성공을 폄하하는 경향이 있습니다. 하지만 성공은 결코 쉽지 않습니다. 성공하기 위해 꾸준한 노력이 필요합니다. 수많은 실패를 극복하고 거듭 새롭게 도전해야 합니다. 수많은 장애물을 극복해야 합니다. 지루함과 권태를 이겨내야 합니다. 포기하고 싶은 순간들을 잘 견뎌야 합니다. 하찮게 보이는 것을 소중히 여기며, 작은 노력을 지속할 수 있어야 합니다. 로버트 콜리어는 “성공은 매일 반복하는 작은 노력들의 합계이다.”고 말합니다. 반 고흐는 “위대한 일은 작은 일들을 꾸준히 실천함으로써 이루어진다.”고 말했습니다.

넷째, 꾸준함은 불가능을 가능케 하는 비결이기 때문입니다. 허드슨 테일러는 “모든 위대한 하나님의 일에는 세 단계가 있다. 처음에는 불가능하고, 그다음에는 어렵고, 마지막에는 이루어진다.”고 말했습니다. 그의 생애를 연구해 보면 정말 불가능한 일들을 가능케 한 것들을 발견하게 됩니다. 하나님이 맡기신 일들을 완수할 때 처음에는 불가능해 보입니다. 하지만 끈기와 믿음을 가지고 꾸준히 노력하면 어려운 단계를 거쳐 결국 목표를 달성하게 됩니다.

나이가 들어도 빛나는 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 꾸준히 배우는 것입니다. 꾸준히 가꾸는 것입니다. 유명한 배우 클린트 이스트우드의 아버지는 그에게 “사람은 나이 들면 나아지거나 부패하거나 둘 중의 하나밖에 없다.”고 말했다고 합니다. 나이가 들어가는 사람의 과제는 부패하지 않고 점점 무르익는 것입니다. 바울은 “겉사람은 후패하나 우리 속은 날로 새롭도다”(고후 4:16, 개역한글)라고 말했습니다. 꾸준한 성품을 통해 속사람을 아름답게 가꾸는 우리 모두가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.

The Most Precious Yet Most Challenging Thing!

As time goes by, we cannot deny the deepening years. Just as nature has four seasons, so does life. Seasons are an undeniable flow. How can we stop the arrival of winter or spring? Can we force the tides to change? Wisdom lies in reading the flow and riding it well. Of course, like salmon swimming upstream to their birthplace, we can go against the current. But this also means that the salmon are nearing the end of their lives.

Aging does not mean our hearts grow old. The hearts of the elderly are still youthful, full of dreams and many challenges to take on. The desire to learn is stronger than ever. Yet, we cannot deny the passing of time and the aging process. However, there are benefits to growing older. We gain the ability to see life from a broader perspective realizing that some principles and laws remain unchanged regardless of the times. We can also share the concentrated wisdom from numerous experiences. My concentrated wisdom has taught me the value of what is truly precious. The most precious yet most challenging thing is "steadfastness."

Recently, I came across an interview with PD Na Young-seok by chance. He said, "In the past, I used to think that 'outstanding' people were great, but now I find those who persistently and tirelessly continue their work to be truly great." Indeed, those who tirelessly persist in their endeavors are remarkable. Of course, persistently doing something meaningless isn't beneficial. We must persist in truly important and valuable matters, especially in our mission and life's purpose. I looked up synonyms for steadfastness: ‘consistency, perseverance, tenacity, endurance, resilience, faithfulness, resoluteness, and unchangingness’ Why is steadfastness important?

First, steadfastness is the key to gaining trust. In many ways, credit is more valuable than money. While we might lose money at times, those who establish good credit will encounter repeated opportunities. As you build credit, wealth naturally follows. Asking people to trust us isn't desirable; trust is a gift earned as people observe our lives. People place their trust in those who are consistent, faithful, and truthful. Building credit and earning trust is also a skill, and people entrust valuable tasks to those they trust.

Second, steadfastness is the key to achievement. Many things are started but left unfinished. Not everything we start needs to be completed, but if something enriches our lives, it is important to see it through. To finish what we start, we must cultivate the power of steadfastness: consistent effort, training, learning, and discipline. The secret to steadfastness lies in small and daily repetitions. John Calvin said, "Steadfastness is the foundation of all achievements." Andrew Carnegie also noted, "The men who have succeeded are men who have chosen one line and stuck to it." It's okay to be a little late; what matters is persevering until the work is complete.

Third, steadfastness is the key to success. We often downplay success, but achieving success is never easy. It requires consistent effort. We must overcome numerous failures and continuously take on new challenges. We must overcome many obstacles. We must conquer boredom and ennui. We must endure moments when we want to give up. We need to value the seemingly insignificant and sustain small efforts. Robert Collier said, "Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out." Vincent Van Gogh remarked, "Great things are done by a series of small things brought together."

Fourth, steadfastness is the key to making the impossible possible. Hudson Taylor said, "There are three stages to every great work of God: first it is impossible, then it is difficult, then it is done." Studying his life reveals how many impossible things he made possible. When completing the tasks God gives us, they initially seem impossible. However, with tenacity and faith, we progress through the difficult stages and ultimately achieve our goals.

We can lead radiant lives even as we age by continuing to learn and cultivate ourselves. Famous actor Clint Eastwood's father once told him, "As people age, they either get better or rot." The task for those growing older is to ripen, not rot. Paul said, "Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day" (2 Corinthians 4:16). Let's all strive to cultivate our inner selves beautifully through steadfast character.
