인격이란 아무도 보지 않을 때 우리가 무엇을 생각하고 어떻게 행동하느냐에 달려 있습니다. 인격은 보이지 않는 내면에 형성되어 외부로 서서히 드러납니다. 지혜 중의 하나는 아무도 보지 않을 때 계속 성장하는 것입니다. 우리는 자연을 통해 지혜를 배웁니다. 씨앗은 아무도 보지 않을 때 자랍니다. 땅속 어두운 곳에서 씨앗은 뿌리를 내립니다. 서서히 싹을 틔웁니다. 서서히 꽃망울을 맺은 다음에 어느 날 아름다운 꽃을 선물해 줍니다. 나무도 서서히 자랍니다. 과일도 서서히 무르익습니다. 아무도 보지 않을 때 꾸준히 성장하는 것이 자연의 비밀입니다.

급성장 보다 소중한 것은 꾸준한 성장입니다. 지속적인 성장입니다. 물론 저도 한때 급성장을 갈망했습니다. 속도와 크기를 중요하게 여겼습니다. 그런데 속도와 크기보다 더 중요한 것이 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 속도보다 방향이 중요합니다. 초고속 시대에 속도를 무시하는 것은 어리석은 일입니다. 하지만 방향이 잘못된 초고속은 아주 빠른 파멸을 맛볼 수 있습니다. 아직도 생명은 서서히 자랍니다. 서서히 성장하고 지속적으로 성장하는 것이 소중합니다.

쉽게 배운 것은 쉽게 잊어버립니다. 벼락치기 공부한 경험을 우리 모두 가지고 있습니다. 시험에는 도움이 되지만 진정한 배움에는 도움이 되지 않습니다. 성경을 암송하고, 암송한 말씀을 마음에 새겨 묵상할 때 말씀이 우리의 언어가 됩니다. 우리의 성품이 됩니다. 쉽게 번 돈은 쉽게 잃게 됩니다. 도박을 해서 얻게 된 돈은 쉽게 사라집니다. 복권 당첨을 해서 얻은 돈은 쉽게 사라집니다. 돈의 신비입니다. 매달 일정하게 들어오는 돈이 가장 값진 돈입니다. 힘쓰고 땀 흘려가며 번 돈이 귀합니다. 그렇게 번 돈을 함부로 낭비할 사람은 없습니다.

아무도 보지 않을 때 계속 성장하는 것이 지혜입니다. 사람들에게 급히 보이기 위한 실력은 반짝이다 사라지는 반딧불 같습니다. 정말 지혜로운 사람은 자신을 감추고 실력을 꾸준히 쌓을 줄 압니다. 실력을 감추는 실력은 아무나 갖출 수 없습니다. 정말 지혜로운 사람만이 실력을 감추는 실력을 갖추게 됩니다. 실력을 감추었다가 가장 적합한 때 그 실력을 발휘할 때 놀라운 일이 전개됩니다. 무엇이든 통달의 단계에 이르기까지는 오랜 시간이 걸립니다. 통달의 단계에 이르기 위해서는 아무도 보지 않을 때 절차탁마(切磋琢磨)의 노력을 기울여야 합니다.

가장 위험한 것은 자신을 속이는 것입니다. 또한 남을 속이는 것입니다. 정직은 인기보다 더 중요합니다. 인기가 나쁜 것이 아닙니다. 인기는 매력입니다. 매력은 끄는 힘입니다. 하지만 인기는 오래가지 않습니다. 꽃처럼 시듭니다. 인기를 지킬 수 있는 길이 있습니다. 그것은 정직이라는 성품입니다. 인기를 지키는 그릇이 정직입니다. 정직하지 않은 인기는 오래가지 않습니다. 정직한 사람의 지혜는 꾸준함에 있습니다. 참된 성공, 지속적인 성공은 보이지 않는 곳에서의 준비 과정이 반드시 필요합니다. 보이지 않는 곳에서 최선을 다한 사람이 결국 빛을 발하게 됩니다.

요셉은 아무도 보지 않을 때 최선을 다했습니다. 아버지와 형제들을 떠나 종으로 팔려간 요셉은 아무도 보지 않은 보디발의 집에서 최선을 다했습니다. 아무도 보지 않을 때, 보디발의 아내의 유혹을 물리쳤습니다. 아무도 보지 않는 감옥에서 최선을 다해 섬겼습니다. 애굽의 언어와 문화와 정치를 배웠습니다. 때가 되었을 때 그가 보이지 않은 곳에서 쌓은 그의 역량은 빛을 발했습니다.

다윗은 아무도 보지 않을 때 아버지의 양을 지키는 데 최선을 다했습니다. 아버지의 양을 지키기 위해 물맷돌 던지는 것을 연마했습니다. 사자와 싸우고 곰과 싸웠습니다. 또한 하프를 타며 노래하고, 시를 썼습니다. 아무도 보지 않은 줄 알았지만 하나님은 다윗을 보고 계셨습니다. 하나님은 다윗의 양치는 태도를 보시고 그를 선택해서 왕으로 세우셨습니다(시 78:70-72). 보이지 않는 곳에서 연마했던 물맷돌 던지는 다윗의 실력이 골리앗을 만났을 때 빛을 발했습니다.

하나님은 은밀한 중에 구제하는 것을 보고 계십니다. 은밀한 중에 드리는 기도를 보고 계십니다. 은밀한 구제와 섬김과 봉사에 상을 주십니다. 은밀한 기도에 응답하십니다. 은밀한 배움, 은밀한 훈련, 은밀한 성장을 소중히 여기십시오. 꾸준함이 강렬함을 이깁니다. 쉽게 사그라지는 붉은 열정보다 은은히 오래가는 푸른 열정이 더 소중합니다. 강력한 노력은 쉽게 지칩니다. 반면에 꾸준한 노력이 늦은 것 같지만 갈수록 힘을 발휘합니다. 강력한 노력은 초반에는 인상적입니다. 하지만 지속하기 어렵기 때문에 장기적 성과를 내기 어렵습니다. 반면에 꾸준함은 서서히 강력한 결과를 만들어 냅니다.

작은 것 속에 비밀이 담겨 있습니다. 작지만 반복하는 것이 지혜입니다. 꾸준함이 좋은 습관을 형성합니다. 꾸준한 사람이 지속적으로 성장합니다. 꾸준한 사람이 시작한 일을 완수합니다. 꾸준한 사람이 결국 승리합니다. 보이지 않는 곳에서 지속적으로 성장하십시오. 아무도 보지 않을 때도 최선을 다하십시오. 꾸준함의 비밀을 가슴에 새기십시오. 작은 노력이 반복되면 큰 결과를 만듭니다. 작은 변화가 모여 큰 변화를 만듭니다. 작지만 날마다 반복하는 것이 지혜입니다. 은밀한 중에 지속적으로 성장하시길 빕니다. 꾸준함의 지혜로 승리하시길 빕니다.

Wisdom in Growing Continuously When No One Is Watching

  Character is determined by what we think and how we behave when no one is watching. It forms invisibly within and slowly reveals itself externally. One of the greatest wisdoms is to continue growing when unseen by others. Nature teaches us this wisdom. A seed grows when no one is watching. Deep underground, in darkness, it sends out roots. Slowly, it sprouts. Gradually, it forms buds, and eventually, it presents the gift of beautiful flowers. Trees grow slowly, and fruits ripen gradually. Consistent growth when unseen is nature's secret.

Consistent and continuous growth is more precious than rapid growth. Of course, I once longed for rapid growth myself, placing importance on speed and size. However, I realized there is something more important than speed or size: direction. Ignoring speed in this high-speed era might seem foolish, but high-speed movement in the wrong direction leads quickly to disaster. Life still grows slowly. Thus, growing steadily and continuously remains precious.

What is easily learned is easily forgotten. We've all experienced cramming for exams; while helpful for passing a test, it rarely results in genuine learning. When we memorize Scripture, deeply meditate on it, and engrave it in our hearts, it becomes our language and shapes our character. Money easily earned is quickly lost. Money won through gambling or a lottery vanishes swiftly. It's one of the mysteries of money. Regular income earned through diligent, consistent effort is valuable. No one squanders money earned through hard work and sweat.

True wisdom is continually growing unseen by others. Skills hastily showcased to impress others vanish quickly like a fleeting firefly. A truly wise person knows how to conceal and steadily build their skills. The ability to conceal one's skills is not easily mastered—it belongs only to those who possess genuine wisdom. Remarkable things happen when hidden skills are revealed at precisely the right moment. Achieving mastery in any field requires long-term dedication and diligent self-refinement, even when no one is watching.

The greatest danger is deceiving oneself or others. Honesty is more important than popularity. Popularity isn't inherently bad; it has appeal and magnetic power. But popularity doesn't last. Like a flower, it fades. There is, however, a way to sustain popularity: honesty. Integrity is the vessel that preserves popularity. Dishonest popularity is short-lived, whereas the wisdom of an honest person lies in consistency. True and lasting success demands preparation done unseen. Those who diligently prepare in private will eventually shine publicly.

Joseph did his best when no one was watching. Sold into slavery, away from his father and brothers, Joseph faithfully served in Potiphar's house, unseen by anyone. He resisted Potiphar’s wife’s temptation when no one was watching. Even in prison, unnoticed by others, he served diligently and learned the language, culture, and politics of Egypt. When the time came, the capacity he had built unseen shone brightly.

David gave his best to protect his father's sheep, unnoticed by others. He practiced throwing stones with his sling, fought lions and bears, played the harp, sang, and composed poetry. Though David thought no one was watching, God saw him. Observing David's faithful shepherding, God chose him as king (Psalm 78:70-72). The skills David quietly honed privately became evident when he faced Goliath.

God sees acts of generosity done in secret. He observes prayers offered in private. God rewards secret acts of generosity, service, and prayer. Treasure private learning, training, and growth. Consistency triumphs over intensity. A gentle, enduring passion is far more valuable than a fiery passion that quickly fades. Intense efforts quickly lead to exhaustion. On the other hand, consistent effort may seem slow at first, but it gradually gains strength. Intense effort is impressive at the beginning, but because it's difficult to sustain, it rarely produces lasting results. In contrast, consistency slowly creates powerful outcomes.

Secrets are hidden in small things. Repetition in small matters is wisdom. Consistency builds good habits. The consistent person grows steadily, completes what they start, and ultimately achieves victory. Keep growing continuously when no one is watching. Give your best even when unnoticed. Embed the secret of consistency in your heart. Small, repeated efforts produce great outcomes. Small changes accumulate to create significant transformations. May you continue to grow quietly, unseen, and may the wisdom of consistency lead you to victory.
