[목회서신] 자신의 성장에 시간을 투자하는 지혜 | The Wisdom of Investing Time in Personal Growth

인생의 문제는 투자의 문제입니다. 우리는 투자하면 돈이나 사업을 생각합니다. 하지만 더욱 중요한 투자는 자신의 성장에 시간을 투자하는 것입니다. 저는 한때 열등감 때문에 많은 고통을 받았습니다. 열등의식이 오랫동안 저를 괴롭혔습니다. 낮은 자존감 때문에 힘들었습니다. 저의 열등의식과 낮은 자존감이 무력감을 낳았습니다. 저는 자신감이 별로 없었습니다. 그러던 제 삶 속에 전환점을 맞이하는 기회가 있었습니다. 그것은 자신의 성장에 먼저 투자하는 것이 중요하다는 원리를 배운 것입니다.

자신의 성장에 투자한다는 것은 무엇을 의미할까요? 날마다 배우는 것입니다. 지속적인 성장이 가장 중요합니다. 지속적인 성장을 위해서는 조급함과 게으름을 경계해야 합니다. 지속적인 성장을 위해서는 성장의 원리를 기억해야 합니다. 성장의 원리는 간단합니다. 성장은 서서히 이루어집니다. 급성장은 위험합니다. 대나무처럼 성장해야 합니다. 대나무는 뿌리를 깊이 내립니다. 또한 대나무는 유연합니다. 대나무는 뿌리가 깊으면서 유연한 까닭에 거센 바람이 불어도 부러지지 않습니다. 흔들리지만 부러지지 않기 위해서는 대나무처럼 뿌리를 깊이 내리고 유연해야 합니다.

자신을 성장시킨다는 것은 자기 계발을 의미합니다. 날마다 조금씩 성장함으로 발전하는 것입니다. 날마다 새로운 지식과 정보와 기술을 배우고 익히는 것입니다. 얄팍한 기술로 만족하는 것이 아니라 삶 전체의 질을 높이는 것입니다. 오늘의 작은 배움이 장차 큰 기회를 만들 수 있습니다. 날마다 조금씩 배우는 것은 씨앗을 심는 것과 같습니다. 지금 배우고 준비하지 않으면 미래의 기회를 붙잡을 수 없습니다.

저는 1982년 미국에 온 이후로 책을 사서 읽고 배우는 데 백 불씩을 투자했습니다. 그 당시 백 불은 정말 큰돈이었습니다. 제가 교회에서 한 달에 받는 사례비가 2백 불이었습니다. 하지만 과감하게 제 자신의 성장을 위해 책을 구입하는데 투자했습니다. 그 이유는 제가 성장해야 가족이 성장할 수 있다고 믿었기 때문입니다. 제가 성장해야 교회가 성장할 수 있다고 믿었기 때문입니다.

처음에는 책을 읽어도 별로 도움이 되는 것 같지 않았습니다. 책을 읽어도 책의 내용이 잘 기억되지 않았습니다. 그래서 생각해 낸 방법이 책을 읽을 때 밑줄을 긋는 것이었습니다. 그리고 좋은 내용을 필사하기 시작했습니다. 그런 과정을 통해 책에서 배운 지식이 존재화 되는 경험을 서서히 하게 되었습니다. 성경 암송과 함께 배운 지식이 제 안에 스며드는 경험을 하게 된 것입니다. 그 경험을 저는 말씀이 육신이 되신 예수님의 삶으로 이해하게 되었습니다.

시간이 지나면서 가슴에 새기고 싶은 지식과 지혜가 담긴 명문장을 컴퓨터에 입력했습니다. 지식이 점점 축적되면서 배운 지식이 연결되고 통합되는 것을 경험했습니다. 어떤 주제에 관심을 갖게 되면, 그 주제를 중심으로 그동안 누적된 지식이 연결되는 것을 경험했습니다. 연결은 기적을 낳습니다. 놀라운 경험이었습니다. 그동안 읽은 책의 내용이 사라지지 않고 쌓여 있었던 것입니다. 그렇게 누적된 지식이, 글을 쓸 때마다 놀라운 깨달음으로 솟구쳐 올라오기 시작했습니다. 마치 맑은 샘에서 샘물이 솟구쳐 올라오는 경험을 한 것입니다. 축적이 돌파를 낳은 것입니다.

처음에는 작지만 시간이 지날수록 배움의 효과는 누적됩니다. 복리처럼 성장합니다. 작은 배움이 쌓이면 큰 변화를 만들어냅니다. 자신의 성장은 지식만을 의미하지 않습니다. 진정한 성장은 자신의 성품 계발과 풍성한 지혜에 있습니다. 시간과 돈은 소중히 여기는 사람에게 더 좋은 기회를 제공해 줍니다. 시간과 돈은 함부로 낭비해서는 안 됩니다. 시간과 돈을 먼저 자신의 성장에 투자해야 합니다. 그때 우리는 다른 사람이 성장하고 성공할 수 있도록 도울 수 있습니다. 다른 사람이 성장하고 풍성한 삶을 살 수 있도록 도울 때 기쁨이 배가 됩니다. 날마다 배우는 데 시간을 투자하십시오. 변화가 당장 나타나지 않는다고 낙심하지 마십시오. 콩나물시루를 생각해 보십시오. 콩나물시루에 물을 부으면 물이 빠져 나갑니다. 하지만 콩나물은 점점 자랍니다.

배운 것과 함께 배운 것을 적용하고 실천하는 것이 중요합니다. 배운 지식을 좋은 생각, 좋은 습관과 태도를 형성하는 데 적용하십시오. 배운 지식과 정보를 좋은 관계를 가꾸는데 적용하십시오. 소통을 잘하는 데 적용하십시오. 문제를 잘 해결하는 데 적용하십시오. 위기를 기회로 만드는 데 적용하십시오. 날마다 성장과 배움을 위해 시간을 투자하십시오. 건강과 마음 관리를 위해 시간을 투자하십시오. 좋은 관계를 맺는 일을 위해 시간을 투자하십시오.

돈보다 더 가치 있는 것이 시간입니다. 돈은 다시 벌 수 있지만 시간은 한 번 지나가면 되돌릴 수 없습니다. 시간을 기도와 말씀에 투자하면 영적으로 성장하게 됩니다. 학습에 투자하면 지혜가 쌓입니다. 관계에 투자하면 신뢰가 쌓입니다. 건강에 투자하면 근력이 쌓입니다. 시간을 낭비하지 마십시오. 소중한 일에 시간을 투자함으로 미래를 준비하십시오. 저는 날마다 배웁니다. 배울 때마다 새로워집니다. 평생 학습을 통해 배움과 성장의 기쁨을 누리시길 빕니다.

The Wisdom of Investing Time in Personal Growth

  The issues we face in life are, at their core, matters of investment. When we think about investment, we often think of money or business. However, the most important investment is investing time in our personal growth. I once suffered greatly from feelings of inferiority. A sense of inadequacy haunted me for years. Low self-esteem made my life difficult. My feelings of inferiority and low self-esteem gave rise to a sense of helplessness. I lacked confidence. Then came a turning point in my life—a moment when I learned the principle that investing in my own growth should come first.

What does it mean to invest in your own growth? It means learning every day. Continuous growth is the key. To grow consistently, we must guard against both impatience and laziness. We also need to remember the principles of growth. The principles of growth are simple. Growth happens gradually. Rapid growth can be dangerous. We need to grow like bamboo. Bamboo sends down deep roots. It is also flexible. Because bamboo has deep roots and is flexible, it doesn’t break even when strong winds blow. To avoid breaking when life’s storms come, we must have deep roots and flexibility, like bamboo.

Investing in personal growth means self-development. It is about progressing step by step through consistent daily growth. It means learning new knowledge, information, and skills each day. True growth is not about being satisfied with shallow techniques but about improving the overall quality of life. Today’s small learnings can create significant opportunities in the future. Learning a little every day is like planting seeds. Without learning and preparing now, you will not be able to seize future opportunities.

Since coming to the United States in 1982, I have invested $100 each month in books and learning. At that time, $100 was a large sum. My monthly salary from the church was $200. But I boldly invested in buying books for my personal growth. I believed that if I grew, my family would grow. I believed that if I grew, my church would grow.

At first, reading books didn’t seem to help much. I had trouble remembering what I read. That’s when I started underlining key parts of books. I also began to copy meaningful passages by hand. Through this process, I gradually experienced the internalization of the knowledge I had gained from reading. Along with memorizing scripture, I began to feel that the knowledge I gained was becoming part of me. I came to understand this experience as being like the life of Jesus, who became the Word made flesh.

Over time, I began to store valuable quotes and wisdom that I wanted to remember in my computer. As my knowledge accumulated, I started to experience a remarkable phenomenon—different pieces of knowledge began to connect and integrate. When I became interested in a particular subject, the knowledge I had accumulated over time naturally aligned with that topic. This process of connection produced breakthroughs. It was an astonishing experience. The knowledge I had gained from reading books had not vanished—it had been stored up and was now rising to the surface with profound insight every time I wrote. It felt like fresh water bubbling up from a clear spring. The accumulation of knowledge gave birth to breakthroughs.

Although the initial progress may seem small, the effects of learning accumulate over time. Growth works like compound interest. Small learnings build up to create significant change. Personal growth is not limited to acquiring knowledge. True growth includes the development of character and the deepening of wisdom. Time and money reward those who value them. We should never waste our time or money carelessly. First, we must invest our time and money in our own growth. Only then can we help others grow and succeed. When we help others grow and live abundant lives, our joy multiplies. Invest your time in learning every day. Do not be discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. Think about growing bean sprouts. When you pour water on a tray of bean sprouts, the water seems to drain away. But the sprouts are still growing.

It’s important not only to learn but also to apply and practice what you’ve learned. Apply the knowledge you’ve gained to developing good thoughts, habits, and attitudes. Use what you’ve learned to build strong relationships. Apply it to improving your communication skills, solving problems, and turning crises into opportunities. Invest your time daily in growth and learning. Invest time in managing your health and mind. Invest time in cultivating meaningful relationships.

Time is more valuable than money. You can earn more money, but time lost can never be recovered. When you invest time in prayer and the Word of God, you grow spiritually. When you invest time in learning, you grow in wisdom. When you invest time in relationships, you build trust. When you invest time in health, you gain strength. Do not waste your time. Invest your time in meaningful things to prepare for the future. I learn something new every day. Every time I learn, I am renewed. I hope you experience the joy of learning and growing through a lifetime of continuous learning.
