[목회서신] 잊혀져 가는 단어 속에 담긴 축복의 비밀 | The Secret of Blessings Contained in Forgotten Words

제가 평생 목회하면서 점점 잊혀져 가는 단어가 있음을 발견했습니다. 순종(順從)이라는 단어입니다. 순종이라는 단어가 잊혀져 가는 이유는 시대의 풍조(風潮) 때문입니다. 풍조란 시대에 따라 변하는 세태를 의미합니다. 우리가 사는 시대는 절대적 진리를 부인합니다. 권위를 인정하려고 하지 않습니다. 권위에 도전하는 것이 지성인의 자랑인 것처럼 보입니다. 용기 있는 사람으로 여겨집니다. 그래서 순종이란 단어를 싫어합니다. 슬프게도 많은 사람이 순종의 미덕을 상실했습니다.

우리는 세월호 사건을 통해 어른들의 말에 맹종하는 것이 위험하다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 학생들이 스스로 생각하고 판단해서 배 밖으로 나왔다면 그토록 많은 희생자가 생기지는 않았을 것입니다. 그래서 잘못된 권위주의는 위험합니다. 올바른 지식을 겸비하지 못한 권위주의는 위험합니다. 진정한 권위는 책임에서 나옵니다. 희생에서 나옵니다. 섬김에서 나옵니다. 올바른 분별력에서 나옵니다. 책임을 회피하면서 특권만을 누리려고 하는 권위는 위험합니다. 경계해야 합니다.

올바른 권위는 아름다운 질서와 조화를 만들어냅니다. 권위가 무너지면 질서가 무너집니다. 질서가 무너지면 혼돈이 찾아옵니다. 그래서 올바른 권위를 가지고 잘 섬길 수 있는 리더가 필요합니다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지께 순종하셨습니다. 예수님은 우리의 죄를 대신 담당하셨습니다. 우리 대신 저주를 받으셨습니다. 우리 대신 심판을 받으셨습니다. 예수님은 섬김의 모범을 보여주셨습니다. 우리는 예수님을 통해 참된 순종을 배웁니다. 순종의 아름다움을 배웁니다.

순종이란 우리를 보호해주고 돌보아 주는 분의 뜻을 따르는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님께 순종하고, 하나님의 말씀에 순종하기 위해서는 하나님을 잘 알아야 합니다. 하나님이 얼마나 좋으신 분인지를 알아야 합니다. 하나님이 얼마나 지혜로우신 분인지를 알아야 합니다. 하나님이 얼마나 능력이 많으신 분인지를 알아야 합니다. 하나님을 올바로 알면 하나님께 자원해서 순종하게 됩니다. 우리가 순종하는 성품을 가꾸기 위해서는 순종이 얼마나 중요한지를 알아야 합니다. 순종이 얼마나 복된지를 알아야 합니다. 순종이 얼마나 우리를 지혜롭게 하는지를 알아야 합니다. 왜 하나님은 우리가 순종하길 원하실까요?

첫째, 순종하는 사람에게는 복이 따라오기 때문입니다. “네가 네 하나님 여호와의 말씀을 청종하면 이 모든 복이 네게 임하며 네게 이르리니 ... 네가 들어와도 복을 받고 나가도 복을 받을 것이니라“(신 28:2, 6). 순종하는 마음은 순한 마음입니다. 순한 마음은 온유한 마음입니다. 모든 것은 마음에서 나옵니다. 그래서 마음을 잘 가꾸어야 합니다. 순종하는 마음은 따뜻하고 부드럽습니다. 순종하는 마음은 고운 마음입니다. 순종하는 마음은 거스르는 마음이 아닙니다. 거역하는 마음이 아닙니다. 차가운 마음이 아닙니다. 완고한 마음이 아닙니다. 순종하는 마음은 선한 마음입니다. 유연한 마음입니다. 착한 마음입니다. 하나님은 온유한 마음에 풍성한 복을 주십니다. “온유한 자들은 땅을 차지하며 풍성한 화평으로 즐거워하리로다”(시 37:11).

둘째, 순종하는 사람에게는 지혜가 따라오기 때문입니다. 지혜는 듣는 것과 연결되어 있습니다. 지혜로운 사람은 잘 듣는 사람입니다. 순종은 듣는 것과 밀접한 관련이 있습니다. 순종의 헬라어는 ”후파쿠오“입니다. 이 단어는 ”... 의 아래에서 듣다.“라는 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 즉 무엇의 권위 아래서 겸손하게 듣는 것을 의미합니다. 순종한다는 것은 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 그 말씀대로 행하는 것입니다. 듣는 것이 지혜입니다. 들을 때 지혜를 얻을 수 있습니다. 또한 들을 때 하나님의 마음과 사람들의 마음을 얻을 수 있습니다. 지혜는 ”듣는 마음“입니다. 솔로몬이 하나님께 구했던 마음은 듣는 마음입니다. “듣는 마음을 종에게 주사 주의 백성을 재판하여 선악을 분별하게 하옵소서”(왕상 3:9하). 하나님은 그에게 듣는 마음을 선물해 주셨습니다. 하나님이 그에게 선물해 주신 듣는 마음은 지혜롭고 총명한 마음이었습니다(왕상 3:12).

셋째, 순종하면 사랑이 따라오기 때문입니다. 사랑하는 것만큼 순종하고, 순종하는 것만큼 사랑하게 됩니다. 순종은 사랑을 낳습니다. 사랑은 순종을 낳습니다. 거역하면서 누군가를 사랑할 수 없습니다. “나의 계명을 지키는 자라야 나를 사랑하는 자니 나를 사랑하는 자는 내 아버지께 사랑을 받을 것이요 나도 그를 사랑하여 그에게 나를 나타내리라”(요 14:21). 이 말씀에서 지킨다는 것은 순종을 의미합니다. 순종하면 하나님 아버지께 사랑을 받습니다. 예수님께 사랑을 받습니다. 순종이 사랑받는 비결입니다. 또한 순종이 평강의 비결입니다. 불순종하면 평강을 상실합니다. 불순종하면 불안합니다. 불순종하면 두렵습니다. 반면에 순종하면 평강이 흘러넘치게 됩니다. 하나님께 순종한다는 것은 하나님을 신뢰하는 것을 의미합니다. 하나님을 신뢰하면 평강이 넘치게 됩니다(사 26:3). 순종하면 놀라운 영적 체험을 하게 됩니다. 도로시는 “순종은 모든 심오한 영적 체험의 문을 여는 열쇠다.”라고 말했습니다.

우리 함께 하나님과 하나님의 말씀에 순종하도록 합시다. 부디 순종하는 성품을 가꾸어서 풍성한 복을 누리시길 빕니다.

The Secret of Blessings Contained in Forgotten Words

Throughout my ministry, I have noticed that certain words are gradually being forgotten. One such word is "obedience." This word is being overlooked due to the trends of our times. Trends refer to the changing social customs according to the era. In today's world, people often reject the idea of absolute truth and are reluctant to acknowledge authority. Challenging authority is seen as a mark of intelligence. It is considered a sign of a courageous person. As a result, the word "obedience" has fallen out of favor, and sadly, many have lost the virtue of obedience.

The Sewol ferry disaster taught us the dangers of blind obedience to authority. If the students had thought and acted independently by evacuating the ship, many lives could have been saved. Misguided authoritarianism is dangerous, especially when it lacks proper knowledge. True authority stems from responsibility, sacrifice, and service. It comes from sound discernment. Authority that seeks to enjoy privileges without shouldering responsibility is hazardous and must be guarded against.

True authority brings about beautiful order and harmony. When authority breaks down, so does order, leading to chaos. That's why we need leaders who can serve with genuine authority. Jesus obeyed God the Father. He took on our sins, bore our curses, and faced judgment in our place. Jesus showed us the perfect example of service. Through Him, we learn true obedience and its beauty.

Obedience means following the will of the one who protects and cares for us. To obey God and His word, we need to truly know Him. We need to understand how good, wise, and powerful God is. When we grasp the true nature of God, we voluntarily choose to obey Him. To develop an obedient heart, we must recognize the importance of obedience, the blessings it brings, and how it makes us wise. Why does God desire our obedience?

First, it’s because blessings follow those who obey. “All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God: … You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.” (Deuteronomy 28:2, 6). A heart of obedience is gentle and meek. Everything flows from the heart, so it's important to cultivate it well. A heart of obedience is warm, tender, and refined. It's not rebellious, resistant, stubborn, or cold. Instead, it's good, flexible, and kind. God bestows abundant blessings on the meek heart. "But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace" (Psalm 37:11).

Second, it’s because wisdom follows those who obey. Wisdom is tied to listening. A wise person is a good listener. Obedience is closely related to listening attentively. The Greek word for obedience, hupakouo, means "to listen under." It signifies humbly listening and obeying under someone's authority. To obey God means to hear His word and act accordingly. Listening is where wisdom begins. It's through listening that we gain wisdom. We also understand both God's heart and others' hearts by listening. Wisdom is having a listening heart. When Solomon prayed to God, he asked for a listening heart, "So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong" (1 Kings 3:9a). The listening heart God granted him was wise and discerning (1 Kings 3:12 NIV).

Third, it’s because love follows when you obey. Just as we love, we obey; and as we obey, we love. Obedience fosters love, and love encourages obedience. It's difficult to truly love someone while resisting them. Jesus said, “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him” (John 14:21). Keeping His commands here means obedience. Through obedience, we receive love from God the Father and Jesus. Obedience is the pathway to experiencing love. Additionally, obedience leads to peace. Disobedience disrupts peace, causing anxiety and fear. On the other hand, obedience brings overflowing peace. Obedience to God means trusting Him, resulting in abundant peace (Isaiah 26:3). Obedience opens the door to wonderful spiritual experiences. Dorothy said, " Obedience is the key that unlocks the door to every profound spiritual experience"

Let's obey together in accordance with God and His word. May you cultivate an obedient spirit and enjoy abundant blessings.
