[목회서신] 저는 “그래도”섬을 좋아합니다. | I Love the Island of "Nevertheless“

   제가 오래전에 한센병 환자들이 모여사는 소록도를 방문한 적이 있습니다. 그분들이 함께 모여 예배드리는 교회가 있습니다. 그 교회를 섬기는 사역자께서 방문객들에게 전해 주신 설교가 오랫동안 가슴에 남아 있습니다. 그분은 소록도를 방문한 우리에게 소록도보다 꼭 가봐야 할 섬이 있다고 소개해 주었습니다. 그 섬의 이름은 “지라도”라는 섬이었습니다. 그분이 소개한 “지라도”는 다니엘 3장에 나오는 다니엘의 세 친구의 신앙 고백에서 나온 섬 이름입니다.

느부갓네살 왕이 금 신상을 만들고 모든 악기 소리를 들을 때 금 신상에 절하게 했습니다. 누구든지 금 신상에 절하지 않은 사람은 즉시 맹렬히 타는 풀무 불에 던져 넣겠다고 선포했습니다. 다니엘의 세 친구는 왕의 명령을 거절했습니다. 그것은 우상숭배인 까닭입니다. 왕이 노하고 분하여 그들을 불러 “너희가 만일 절하지 아니하면 즉시 너희를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에 던져 넣겠다”(단 3:15)고 위협했습니다. 그들이 믿는 살아 계신 하나님을 조롱했습니다.

사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 왕께 다음과 같이 대답했습니다. “느부갓네살이여 우리가 이 일에 대하여 왕에게 대답할 필요가 없나이다 왕이여 우리가 섬기는 하나님이 계시다면 우리를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에서 능히 건져내시겠고 왕의 손에서도 건져내시리이다 그렇게 하지 아니하실지라도 왕이여 우리가 왕의 신들을 섬기지도 아니하고 왕이 세우신 금 신상에게 절하지도 아니할 줄을 아옵소서”(단 3:16하-18). 이 대답 속에 “그렇게 하지 아니하실지라도”가 나옵니다.

한센병에서 치료받은 가족들을 섬기는 사역자가 소개한 섬이 바로 “지라도”입니다. 소록도에 살았던 한센병 가족들의 신앙은 “그렇게 하지 아니하실지라도”의 신앙이었습니다. 하나님이 병을 고쳐주지 아니하실지라도 하나님을 의지했습니다. 그분들 가운데는 성경 66권 중의 한 권을 암송한 분도 있었습니다. 어떤 분은 거의 모든 성경을 암송한 분도 있었습니다. “지라도”의 신앙은 정말 대단한 신앙입니다. 기적을 믿지만 기적을 일으켜 주지 않으셔도 하나님을 전적으로 신뢰하는 초월신앙입니다. 기적과 상관없이 하나님을 사랑하고 의지하는 초월신앙입니다. “소록도”보다 더 깊은 감명을 주는 섬이 “지라도”입니다.

제가 “지라도”와 함께 좋아하는 섬이 있습니다. 그 섬의 이름은 “그래도”입니다. 제가 “그래도”라는 섬을 좋아하게 된 것은 조셉 M. 마샬이 쓴 책 때문입니다. 그는 《그래도 계속 가라》는 책을 썼습니다. 이 책은 할아버지가 손자에게 일평생 살아온 지혜를 가르쳐 주는 내용을 담고 있습니다. 할아버지는 손자에게 인생에는 양면이 있다는 것을 가르쳐 줍니다. “살다 보면 기쁜 일만큼이나 슬픈 일도 있고, 이길 때가 있으면 질 때도 있으며, 일어서는 것만큼이나 넘어지는 경우도 허다하단다. 배부를 때가 있으면 배고플 때가 있고, 좋은 일과 마찬가지로 나쁜 일도 일어나기 마련이다.”(조셉 M. 마샬, 『그래도 계속 가라』, 조화로운 삶, 24쪽). “인생이란 양지쪽을 걷는가 하면, 때로는 음지쪽도 걸어야 하는 여행이다.”(35쪽). “너에게는 장점만이 아니라 약점도 있단다. 그럴 수밖에 없는 것이, 인생의 모든 것은 다 양쪽을 지니고 있기 때문이다.”(56쪽).

할아버지는 손자에게 “살아남았다는 것 자체가 곧 성공을 의미한단다.”라고 가르칩니다. 그는 삶의 폭풍이 몰고 오는 바람과 추위와 어둠에 맞서는 것이 쉽지 않지만 “그래도” 꼭 겪어야 한다고 가르칩니다. 폭풍우가 몰아쳐도 계속 한 걸음씩 걸어가라고 가르칩니다. “인생이란 한 번에 한 걸음씩 걸어가는 여행이다. 때로는 쉬울 때도 있지만, 우리의 여정에서 힘든 경우가 너무나 많지. ‘그래도’ 그렇게 한 걸음씩 내디디면서 이 여행을 이루어 나가야 해. ‘천리 길도 한 걸음부터’라는 말이 있듯이 삶이라는 여행도 마찬가지란다.”(168쪽).

인생은 본래 어려운 것입니다. 세상에 태어나 산다는 것은 힘든 것입니다. 그래도 우리는 그 힘든 인생을 살아가고, 살아내야 합니다. 힘든 인생을 살아낸다는 것은 위대한 것입니다. 그것 자체가 성공입니다. 캘리포니아는 산불로, 동부는 한파로 고통을 받고 있습니다. 대한민국은 혼돈 속에 있습니다. 그래도 우리는 다시 일어서야 합니다. 그래도 우리는 다시 시작해야 합니다. 그래도 우리는 다시 집을 지어야 합니다. 그래도 우리는 소망을 품고 미래를 향해 전진해야 합니다.

다니엘은 기도하면 사자 굴에 던져 죽임을 당하는 것을 알았습니다. 그래도 그는 전에 하던 대로 하루에 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 기도했습니다. 그래도 그는 하나님께 감사했습니다(단 6:10). 그래도 그는 하나님을 항상 섬겼습니다(단 6:16). “그래도”의 섬을 통해 영감을 받고 다시 새출발을 하면 좋겠습니다. 그래도 사랑합시다. 그래도 성경을 읽고 암송합시다. 그래도 책을 읽고 하나라도 더 배웁시다. 그래도 다시 꿈을 꿉시다. 그래도 한 걸음을 내딛도록 합시다.

인생은 양면이 있습니다. 언제나 슬플 수는 없습니다. 슬픔 끝에 기쁨이 찾아옵니다. 언제나 실패할 수는 없습니다. 실패의 끝자락에 승리가 찾아옵니다. 이별의 끝자락에 새로운 만남이 찾아옵니다. 우리 함께 하나님을 의지하면서 날마다 새롭게 출발합시다. 인생이 힘들지만 그래도 계속 전진합시다. 반드시 좋은 날들이 찾아올 것입니다(렘 29:11; 롬 15:13).

I Love the Island of "Nevertheless“

   A long time ago, I had the opportunity to visit Sorokdo, an island where many Hansen’s disease patients live. On the island, there is a church where these individuals gather to worship. The message delivered by the minister serving that church has remained in my heart for years. During the visit, the minister introduced us to another island that we absolutely had to know about, even more than Sorokdo. The name of that island is “Even If” (“Jirado” in Korean). This “Even If” island originates from the confession of faith by Daniel’s three friends, as recorded in Daniel 3.

King Nebuchadnezzar had a golden image made and decreed that everyone must bow down and worship it when they heard the sound of various musical instruments. Anyone who refused would immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace. Daniel’s three friends refused the king’s command because it was idolatry. Enraged, the king summoned them and threatened, “If you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace.” (Daniel 3:15). He even mocked their faith in the living God.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king: “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up” (Daniel 3:16-18). The phrase “even if he does not” is the inspiration behind the name of this island, “Even If.”

The minister who served families affected by Hansen’s disease explained that their faith embodied this “Even If” belief. Even if God didn’t heal them, they continued to trust Him. Among them were people who memorized an entire book of the Bible, and some even memorized nearly all of Scripture. The faith of “Even If” is extraordinary—a transcendent faith that fully trusts God, whether or not miracles occur. It is a faith that loves and depends on God regardless of circumstances. Sorokdo left a deep impression on me, but the “Even If” island touched me even more profoundly.

Alongside “Even If,” there is another island I hold dear: the island of “Nevertheless.” (“Geulaedo” in Korean) My love for this island stems from the teachings of Joseph M. Marshall in his book Keep Going: The Art of Perseverance. The book shares the wisdom of a grandfather passing on life lessons to his grandson. The grandfather teaches that life has two sides: “In life there is sadness as well as joy, losing as well as winning, falling as well as standing, hunger as well as plenty, badness as well as goodness.” (Joseph M. Marshall, Keep Going: The Art of Perseverance, 8, Kindle) “Life is a journey sometimes walked in light, sometimes in shadow.” (8) “You have weakness as well as strengths You have both because in life there is two of everything.” (8)

The grandfather also imparts this profound truth: "The very fact that you have survived is success." He acknowledges that facing life’s storms—its winds, chills, and darkness—is not easy, but “nevertheless,” it is something you must endure. He teaches his grandson to keep walking, even in the midst of the storm: "Life is a journey made one step at a time, sometimes easy and too often difficult. We must make this journey by taking those steps. After all, it begins with a single one.” (85)

Life, by nature, is challenging. To be born and to live is difficult. Nevertheless, we must live it, and we must endure it. To persevere through life’s difficulties is a remarkable achievement—it is success in itself. California suffers from wildfires, and the East Coast faces harsh winter storms. South Korea is engulfed in chaos. Nevertheless, we must rise again. Nevertheless, we must rebuild. Nevertheless, we must press forward with hope for the future.

Daniel knew that praying could lead to his death in the lions’ den. Nevertheless, he prayed three times a day, giving thanks to God, just as he had always done (Daniel 6:10). Nevertheless, he continued to serve God faithfully (Daniel 6:16) May the island of “Nevertheless” inspire you to make a fresh start. Nevertheless, let us love. Nevertheless, let us read and memorize Scripture. Nevertheless, let us read books and continue to learn. Nevertheless, let us dream again. Nevertheless, let us take the next step forward.

Life has two sides. We cannot always be sad. After sadness, joy will come. We cannot always fail. At the end of failure, victory awaits. At the end of goodbyes, new encounters begin. Together, let us depend on God and make a fresh start each day. Life is difficult, but nevertheless, let us press on. Surely, good days will come (Jeremiah 29:11; Romans 15:13).
