나이가 들면서 가끔 어릴 적 생각을 상기(想起)해 보곤 합니다. 제가 초등학교 시절에 어느 날 문득 제 처지를 알게 되었습니다. 집은 가난했습니다. 저는 왜소하고 열등감이 심했습니다. 스스로 생각해 볼 때 머리가 명석하지 못했습니다. 그렇다면 내가 어떻게 살아야 할까를 고심했습니다. 어머니는 제가 어릴 적에 “죽고 싶다”는 말을 가끔 하셨습니다. 물론 그때는 어머니가 예수님을 만나기 전이었습니다. 저는 어머니가 “죽고 싶다”는 말을 들을 때면 불안했습니다. 두려웠습니다. 어머니가 제 곁을 떠나시면 “나는 어떻게 살 수 있을까”라는 생각을 했습니다.

만약 어머니가 제 곁을 떠나신다면 살 길은 하나밖에 없다는 생각을 했습니다. 그것은 성실하게 살아가는 것이었습니다. 그 당시 제 생각에 성실은 착함이었습니다. 꾸준함이었습니다. 제가 성실이란 단어를 품게 된 이유가 있습니다. 그것은 성실해야 사람들의 신뢰를 얻고, 사람들의 사랑을 받을 수 있다고 생각한 까닭입니다. 저는 그 당시 큰 꿈을 가슴에 품을 형편이 되지 못했습니다. 가정 형편상 대학에 가는 것은 불가능했습니다. 그렇다면 제가 사람들의 신뢰를 얻는 유일한 길은 성실이라고 생각했습니다. 그래서 “성실을 무기로 삼자”라는 생각을 마음에 품었습니다.

물론 제가 미리 말씀드리지만, 항상 성실하게 살아왔다는 것이 아닙니다. 성실하게 살지 못할 때도 많았습니다. 제 자신을 성찰할 때마다 성실함이 부족하다고 느끼며 살고 있습니다. 그래서 더욱 성실에 관심을 갖고 전념하는 것 같습니다. 저는 어릴 적에 조금 늦은 편이었습니다. 총명한 어린아이가 아니었기에 두각을 드러내지 못했습니다. 그런 까닭에 더욱 성실하게 살기로 마음먹었습니다. 그런데 많은 세월이 흐른 오늘에 이르러 생각해 보니, 제가 무기로 삼은 성실은 참 좋은 것입니다. 성실은 좋은 성품입니다. 성실은 좋은 삶의 태도입니다.

성실(誠實)이란 말은 “정성” 성(誠)에 “열매” 실(實)의 합성어입니다. 성실(誠實)에서 성(誠)이라는 한문은 “말씀” 언(言)에 “이룰” 성(成)이 합해진 단어입니다. 성(誠)이란 말과 행동이 하나가 되어 결과를 만들어내는 것을 의미합니다. 진실된 마음과 그것을 실천으로 옮기는 일관성을 통해 시작한 일을 완수하는 것을 의미합니다. 성실(誠實)에서 실(實)은 나무가 뿌리를 내리고 자라 열매를 맺어 집안을 풍요롭게 한다는 뜻입니다. 실(實)이라는 한자는 열매와 뿌리를 모두 포함하는 말입니다. 뿌리가 깊고 견고한 나무가 풍성한 열매를 맺는다는 뜻입니다.

성실은 제가 강조하는 “뿌리 깊은 영성”을 의미하는 단어입니다. 나무는 하루아침에 뿌리를 깊이 내리는 것이 아닙니다. 깊이 뿌리를 내리기 위해서는 많은 시간이 필요합니다. 깊이 뿌리를 내릴수록 나무는 풍성한 열매를 맺게 됩니다. 나무에게 배우는 것이 성실함입니다. 한결같음입니다. 비가 오나 눈이 오나 늘 같은 자리에 서 있습니다. 나무는 폭염을 견뎌낼 때 더욱 뿌리를 깊이 내립니다. 나무에게 배우는 성실은 꾸준함입니다. 한 길을 오랫동안 추구하는 것입니다.

유진 피터슨은 《한 길 가는 순례자》라는 책을 썼습니다. 이 책의 핵심은 영적 성숙이란 단기적인 사건이 아니라 꾸준한 순종과 인내의 과정을 통해 이루어진다는 것입니다. 그의 책 이름은 니체의 글에서 나왔습니다. 니체는 "하늘과 땅에서 본질적인 것은 동일한 방향으로의 긴 순종이다. 이는 항상 결과적으로 삶을 살 가치 있게 만드는 무언가를 만들어낸다."라는 말을 남겼습니다. 유진 피터슨은 자신이 니체를 좋아하지 않지만, 그가 한 말은 아주 소중하다고 강조합니다. “동일한 방향으로의 긴 순종”은 그리스도인들이 주님께 순종하기 위해 새겨야 할 말입니다.

조금 느리더라도 성실하게 살아가는 것이 지혜입니다. 저는 성경과 함께 많은 책을 읽으면서 아름다운 성취를 이룬 사람들의 생애를 연구했습니다. 끝까지 쓰임 받는 사람들의 생애를 연구했습니다. 하나님과 사람들에게 신뢰를 얻은 사람들의 생애를 연구했습니다. 그들에게서 발견한 공통점이 성실함입니다. 훌륭한 인물들은 한결같이 성실을 보배처럼 여겼습니다. 성실에 관한 명언을 남겼습니다. 로버트 클리어는 “성실은 하루하루의 노력에서 비롯된다.”라고 말합니다. 찰스 디킨스는 “성실은 성공의 문을 여는 열쇠다.”라고 말합니다. 빈스 롬바르디는 “성실은 자기 자신과의 약속을 지키는 것이다.”라고 말합니다. 앤드류 카네기는 “성실은 지속적인 성공의 기초다.”라고 말합니다. 피터 드러커는 “성실은 재능을 이긴다.”라고 말합니다.

하나님이 다윗의 중심을 보시고 그를 왕으로 선택하셨습니다(삼상 16:7). 다른 형제들과 다르게 다윗은 성실했습니다. 그는 아버지의 양을 칠 때 성실했습니다. 하나님이 그에게 맡긴 사명을 성실하게 완수했습니다. 시편 기자는 다윗의 성실함을 증언합니다. “이에 저가 그 마음의 성실함으로 기르고 그 손의 공교함으로 지도하였도다”(시 78:72, 개역한글). 조금 느려도 괜찮습니다. 조금 느려도 시작한 일을 마치십시오. 공부를 시작했다면 시작한 공부를 마치도록 하십시오. 우선 작은 일부터 끝내는 훈련을 하십시오. 무슨 일이든 끝맺음을 잘하도록 훈련하십시오. 작은 일에 충실하십시오. 작은 성취가 쌓여 큰 성취를 이루게 됩니다. 성실을 통해 풍성한 삶을 사시길 빕니다.

Wisdom in Living Faithfully Even If Slowly

As I grow older, I often find myself reflecting on my childhood. One day, I realized my situation during my elementary school years. Our family was poor. I was small and had a deep sense of inferiority. I didn’t consider myself bright. This led me to ponder deeply about how I should live. My mother, during my childhood, would occasionally say, “I want to die.” This was before she met Jesus, of course. Hearing her say that made me anxious and fearful. I often wondered, “How will I manage if my mother leaves me?”

If my mother were to leave, I believed I had only one option: to live faithfully. To me, faithfulness meant goodness and persistence. I clung to faithfulness because I believed it was the only way to gain people’s trust and love. I couldn’t dream big due to our circumstances. Attending college was out of the question. So, I concluded that faithfulness was the only way to earn people’s trust. So, I kept the thought, “Let faithfulness be my weapon,” in my heart.

Of course, I must clarify that I haven’t always lived faithfully. There have been many times when I wasn’t as faithful as I wished to be. Whenever I reflect on myself, I feel I fall short of true faithfulness. Perhaps this is why I am so committed to being faithful. As a child, I was somewhat slow and not particularly bright, which prevented me from standing out. This made me even more determined to live faithfully. Looking back now, I realize that embracing faithfulness was a wise choice. Faithfulness is a valuable character trait and a positive attitude to life.

The word “faithfulness” (誠實) combines “sincerity” (誠) with “fruit” (實). The Chinese character for “sincerity” (誠) combines “words” (言) with “to achieve” (成), implying that words and actions come together to produce results. It signifies completing what was started through consistent, sincere intention and action. The Chinese character for “fruit” (實) of “faithfulness” (誠實) indicates that a tree’s roots grow deep and bear fruit, enriching the household. The Chinese character for “fruit” (實) includes both fruit and roots, signifying that a deeply rooted and robust tree yields abundant fruit.

Faithfulness represents the “deep-rooted spirituality” I emphasize. A tree doesn’t develop deep roots overnight; it takes time. The deeper the roots, the more fruitful the tree becomes. Learning from trees teaches us about faithfulness and consistency. Trees stand firm in the same place, regardless of the weather. They deepen their roots while enduring scorching heat. From trees, we learn that faithfulness involves steady, long-term pursuit in one direction.

Eugene Peterson wrote the book “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.” The core message of this book is that spiritual maturity is not a short-term event but is achieved through consistent obedience and patience. The title comes from Nietzsche’s writing, where he states, “The essential thing ‘in heaven and earth’ is... that there should be a long obedience in the same direction; thereby results, and has always resulted in the long run, something which has made life worth living.” Though Peterson didn’t favor Nietzsche, he valued this statement, emphasizing that “a long obedience in the same direction” is essential for Christians in their obedience to the Lord.

Living faithfully, even if slowly, is wisdom. I have been studying the lives of people who achieved beautiful accomplishments through many books along with the Bible. I studied the lives of those who were used until the end and were faithful. I studied the lives of those who earned trust from both God and people. The common trait I found in them is faithfulness. Great individuals consistently valued faithfulness like a treasure. They left quotes about faithfulness. Robert Collier said, “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” Charles Dickens stated, “Faithfulness is the key that opens the door to success.” Vince Lombardi mentioned, “Faithfulness is keeping the promises made to oneself.” Andrew Carnegie remarked, “Diligence is the foundation of sustainable success.” Peter Drucker said, “Diligence beats talent.”

God chose David as king by looking at his heart (1 Samuel 16:7). Unlike his brothers, David was faithful. He was faithful in tending his father’s sheep and faithfully fulfilled the mission God entrusted to him. The psalmist testifies to David’s faithfulness: “And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” (Psalm 78:72) It’s okay to be a little slow. What matters is completing what you start. If you start studying, make sure to finish. Practice completing small tasks first. Discipline yourself to finish what you start well. Be faithful in small matters. Small achievements accumulate into great accomplishments. I hope you live a fruitful life through faithfulness.
