[목회서신] 흐르는 물처럼 유연하게 살아가는 지혜 | The Wisdom of Living Flexibly Like Flowing Water

살아가는 것이 힘듭니다. 사업도 힘들고, 직장 생활도 힘듭니다. 결혼 생활도 힘듭니다. 자녀를 키우는 것도 힘듭니다. 오랫동안 목회를 해온 까닭에 이제 조금 쉬울 것 같은데 여전히 목회가 힘듭니다. 만나는 사람마다 자기 나름대로 아픔을 안고 살아가는 것을 봅니다. 밝은 미소 아래 감춘 아픈 상처가 보입니다. 겉으로 강해 보이는 사람일수록 몰래 조용히 눈물 흘립니다. 때로는 흐르는 눈물을 조용히 삼킵니다. 하지만 하나님의 은혜로 우리는 잘 살아내고 있습니다. 소망을 품고 삽니다. 꿈꾸며 삽니다. 어제보다 오늘, 오늘보다 내일 더 나아질 것을 믿고 삽니다.

사는 것이 힘들기 때문에 사는 법을 계속 배워야 합니다. 저는 흐르는 물을 통해 살아가는 법을 배웁니다. 우리는 자연을 통해, 흐르는 물을 통해 살아가는 기술을 배워야 합니다. 그 이유는 하나님이 자연 속에 살아가는 지혜를 담아 두신 까닭입니다. 사실 우리 몸도 70% 이상이 물로 되어 있습니다. 우리가 어머니 자궁에 잉태될 때 우리는 물과 같은 존재였습니다. 어린 생명은 물속에서 성장하다 세상으로 나옵니다. 그래서 사람은 물 없이 살 수 없습니다. 하나님은 생수의 근원이십니다(렘 17:13). 예수님은 생수로 오셨습니다. 생수를 주시기 위해 오셨습니다(요 4:10, 14). 성령님도 생수처럼 역사하십니다(요 7:38-39).

흐르는 물은 겸손합니다. 물은 높은 곳에서 낮은 곳으로 흐릅니다. 계속해서 낮은 곳으로 흘러가 바다로 들어갑니다. 바다는 가장 낮은 곳에 임해서 모든 물을 품습니다. 바다는 물들의 왕입니다. 그 이유는 가장 낮은 곳에서 모든 시내와 강을 다 품기 때문입니다. 물은 유연합니다. 물은 흐르다가 막히면 멈춥니다. 흐름과 멈춤의 조화가 물의 조화입니다. 막히면 멈추고 기다립니다. 기다리는 중에 모인 물이 누적되면 막힌 것을 뚫고 바다를 향해 흘러갑니다. 물은 적응력이 탁월합니다. 자신이 어느 그릇에 담겨도 그 그릇에 적응합니다. 작은 컵에 담겨도 만족하고, 큰 항아리에 담겨도 만족합니다. 적응을 통해 자족하는 것이 물입니다.

물은 만물을 소생시킵니다. 씨앗도 나무도 물이 없으면 살 수 없습니다. 물은 자신을 드러내지 않지만 씨앗에 스며들고, 나무뿌리에 스며듭니다. 물의 지혜는 감춤에 있습니다. 자신을 감춘 물은 씨앗을 싹틔우고, 나무를 살리고 치유하고 회복합니다. 풍성한 열매를 맺게 합니다. 물은 스스로 자랑하지 않습니다. 물은 말이 없습니다. 거센 파도처럼 거센 바람을 탈 때도 있지만 물은 고요함을 좋아합니다. 호수에 담긴 물은 고요합니다. 깊은 바다 속에 담긴 물은 고요합니다. 물론 고요하다고 움직임이 없는 것은 아닙니다. 깊은 바다 속에서도 바닷물은 흐릅니다.

물은 생명입니다. 그래서 생수(生水)라고 말합니다. 생수(生水)는 “날” 생(生)과 “물” 수(水)의 합성어입니다. “날” 생(生)이라는 말은 “낳다. 살리다, 살아 있다.”는 뜻을 내포하고 있습니다. 물을 통해 생명이 태어납니다. 물은 시들어가는 것을 소생시킵니다. 시들어가는 꽃에 물을 주면 시들어가던 꽃이 소생하는 것을 봅니다. 병원에 가면 수액을 놓아줍니다. 수액 속에는 물과 함께 소량의 소금이 담겨 있습니다. 물과 소금이 만나서 약한 몸을 소생시키고, 독소를 제거하고, 몸을 치유합니다. 에스겔 47장에 보면 성전 문지방에서 흘러나온 생수가 점점 흘러 충만해집니다. 처음에는 발목, 다음에는 무릎과 허리와 머리를 거쳐 마침내 차고 넘쳐흐릅니다. 생수가 흐르는 곳마다 죽은 바다가 살아납니다. 다시 고기가 넘쳐납니다. 나무들의 잎사귀는 치유하는 약이 됩니다.

물은 부드럽지만 강합니다. 작은 물방울이 계속 떨어지면 바위를 뚫습니다. 사자성어로 수적천석(水滴穿)石)으로 알려져 있습니다. 작고 연약한 물방울이라도 끊임없이 떨어지면 돌에 아름다운 구멍을 낼 수 있습니다. 성실함의 중요성을 가르쳐 주는 말입니다. 꾸준함의 중요성을 가르쳐 주는 말입니다. 거친 것이 강해 보이지만 정말 강한 것은 유연한 것입니다. 부드러움이 강함을 이깁니다. 영성 훈련은 날마다 부드러움을 가꾸는 것입니다. 이기는 것이 지는 것이고, 지는 것이 이기는 것입니다. 이기고 지는 것보다 더 중요한 것은 사람을 얻는 것입니다. 화평한 것입니다. 목적을 성취하는 것입니다. 이기기 위해 대화하지 말고 사람을 얻기 위해 대화하십시오.

쉬운 일은 아니지만 흐르는 물처럼 유연하게 살 수 있으면 좋겠습니다. 변화를 수용하고, 적응할 줄 아는 사람이 되고 싶습니다. 딱딱하고 경직되고 거친 사람보다, 부드럽고 유연하고 따뜻한 사람이 되고 싶습니다. 자신을 드러내어 자랑함으로 부러움의 대상이 되기보다, 은밀히 다른 사람을 도와주는 고마운 사람이 되고 싶습니다. 물이 늘 자신을 감출 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 하지만 필요할 때마다 감출 줄 아는 물처럼 살고 싶습니다. 바다처럼 가장 낮은 곳에서 모든 것을 품고, 정화시키고, 치유하고, 살리고, 키우는 사람이 되고 싶습니다. 제가 쓴 글처럼 제가 살지 못해도 용서해 주십시오. 하지만 쓴 글처럼 살고 싶어 글을 쓰곤 합니다.

우리는 불확실한 시대, 예측할 수 없는 시대에 살고 있습니다. 급변하는 시대에 살고 있습니다. 이런 시대에 필요한 것이 흐르는 물과 같은 유연함의 영성입니다. 물을 통해 배운 지혜를 삶 속에 적용하시면 좋겠습니다.

The Wisdom of Living Flexibly Like Flowing Water

  Life is difficult. Running a business is hard. Work life is hard. Marriage is hard. Raising children is hard. Even though I have been in ministry for a long time, and it seems like it should be easier by now, ministry remains difficult. I see that everyone I meet carries their own pains. I can see the hidden wounds behind their bright smiles. The stronger someone appears on the outside, the more quietly they shed tears in secret. Sometimes they swallow their tears silently. Yet by the grace of God, we are living well. We live with hope. We dream as we live. We live believing that today will be better than yesterday, and tomorrow will be better than today.

Because life is hard, we need to keep learning how to live. I have learned how to live from flowing water. We need to learn the art of living from nature and from flowing water. This is because God has embedded the wisdom of life in nature. In fact, over 70% of our bodies are made up of water. When we were conceived in our mother’s womb, we were like water. A young life grows in water before entering the world. That is why humans cannot survive without water. God is the fountain of living water (Jeremiah 17:13). Jesus came as the living water. He came to give us the living water (John 4:10, 14). The Holy Spirit also works like living water (John 7:38-39).

Flowing water is humble. Water flows from high places to low places. It keeps flowing downward until it reaches the sea. The sea, resting at the lowest place, embraces all the waters. The sea is the king of waters because it accepts all the streams and rivers from the lowest place. Water is flexible. When water encounters an obstacle while flowing, it stops. The balance between flowing and stopping is the harmony of water. When it encounters a barrier, it stops and waits. When enough water gathers during this waiting, it overcomes the obstacle and continues flowing toward the sea. Water is highly adaptable. It conforms to the shape of whatever container it is in. It is content in a small cup and content in a large jar. Water teaches us contentment through adaptability.

Water brings life to all things. Seeds and trees cannot survive without water. Water does not reveal itself, yet it seeps into seeds and tree roots. The wisdom of water lies in its hiddenness. Water that remains hidden causes seeds to sprout, revives trees, heals, and restores. It brings forth abundant fruit. Water does not boast about itself. Water does not speak. Although water can be stirred by strong waves and winds, it prefers stillness. Water held in a lake is still. Water deep in the ocean is quiet. Stillness does not mean absence of movement. Even in the depths of the ocean, water is always flowing.

Water is life. That is why it is called “living water.” The term “living water” comes from the combination of the Chinese characters 生 (to give birth, to bring to life) and 水 (water). Life is born through water. Water revives that which is withering. A flower that is wilting springs back to life when watered. When patients receive an IV at a hospital, it contains water mixed with a small amount of salt. The combination of water and salt revitalizes weak bodies, removes toxins, and heals the body. In Ezekiel 47, the water flowing from the temple threshold grows deeper and fuller. First it reaches the ankles, then the knees, the waist, and finally it overflows. Wherever the living water flows, the dead sea comes to life. Fish fill the sea once again. The leaves of the trees become healing medicine.

Water is soft, but strong. A small drop of water, when it keeps falling, can penetrate stone. This is known in the saying 水滴穿石 (water drops pierce stone). Even a small and weak drop of water, when it falls continuously, can create a beautiful hole in the rock. This teaches us the importance of faithfulness. It teaches us the power of perseverance. Harshness may appear strong, but true strength is found in flexibility. Softness overcomes strength. Spiritual discipline is about cultivating gentleness day by day. To win is to lose, and to lose is to win. More important than winning or losing is gaining people, creating peace, and achieving your purpose. Do not engage in conversation to win an argument, but to win people’s hearts.

It is not easy, but I hope I can live as flexibly as flowing water. I want to be a person who can accept and adapt to change. I want to be a soft, flexible, and warm person rather than someone rigid, hard, and rough. I would rather be someone who quietly helps others rather than someone who seeks admiration and recognition. Water cannot always remain hidden, but I want to be like water — knowing when to reveal myself and when to hide. Like the sea, I want to be someone who embraces all things, purifies, heals, gives life, and nurtures growth from the lowest place. Please forgive me if I fail to live according to the words I have written. But I write because I long to live as I have written.

We are living in uncertain and unpredictable times. We are living in rapidly changing times. What we need in this era is the spirituality of flexibility, like flowing water. I hope you will apply the wisdom learned from water into your life.
